The Opera Tattler

It was Ruth Ann Swenson that made me into a real opera fan, despite the fact I've never been much for diva worship (absolutely nothing wrong with loving singers, it's just not my thing). Until I heard her as Ophelia in Thomas' Hamlet I had no idea the human voice could even sound like that, it was just incredible. I adore Susan Graham as well. These two are pretty much my favorite soprano and favorite mezzo, so Ariodante has just been splendid for me in that sense.

Sarah

I saw Susan last summer in "Iphigenie", which made ME into an opera fan. I'm finding that mezzos have some great repertoire, especially now that they've expanded into the pre-Mozart roles. She will be in one of the Met cinemacasts; she's also giving a short tour next spring and she's coming to my home town! So that one is already inked into my calendar. I hope she does more opera Stateside.
